“Engineered Models and Molecular Mechanisms of Skeletal Muscle Endogenous Repair ”
Dr. Penney Gilbert is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. She holds cross-appointments in the Department of Biochemistry and the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research. Dr. Gilbert received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania under the mentorship of Dr. Valerie Weaver and then pursued her Postdoctoral Studies with Dr. Helen Blau at Stanford University. Dr. Gilbert’s team engineers and studies three-dimensional models of human skeletal muscle an explores muscle stem cell Mechanobiology with the goal of identifying signaling pathways that can be tweaked to boost the function skeletal muscle stem cells in the body. Dr. Gilbert is recipient of an Ontario Early Researcher Award and a BMES-CMBE “Rising Star” Award. Dr. Gilbert holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Endogenous Repair.
